The idea for our foster program called Seniors Helping Seniors came from a very special 8-year old dog named Lugnut in 2019. Lugnut's first owner passed away so she came to live at OHP. Laura is in her 80's and went through a tough time when she became widowed after losing her husband of 50 years. Laura wanted the companionship of a dog but she knew that she could not commit to a long-term agreement to take a dog because of her fragile health. Ol' Hank's Place matched Lugnut and Laura in the foster program. They take walks together, have gone on trips together, and best of all, they take care of each other.
With the Seniors Helping Seniors foster program, a senior human can foster a senior dog for as long as they are able. The dog can be returned to Ol' Hank's Place at any time. While the dog is being fostered, Ol' Hank's Place continues to manage the dog's healthcare and provide food and supplies.

Occasionally, OHP takes in an elderly dog whose senior owner is unable to continue taking care of them due to having to be placed in an assisted living facility. It can be a difficult experience as the human and canine are very close to one another and the resulting separation brings grief to both. To bridge this gap, Executive Director, Susan Cox designed a program where residents of OHP can visit their owner at an assisted living facility or nursing home. The visits, which last from 30 minutes to an hour, are a blessing for both the dog and the human.
